Who is Tyler, the Creator?
Tyler, the Creator was born Tyler Okonma on March 6, 1991, in Los Angeles. As a teenager he founded Odd Future, a skate-and-rap collective that also launched Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt and Syd. His early records were shocking and confrontational, but with Flower Boy in 2017 he revealed a softer, more melodic side, and every album since has been a reinvention. He produces and arranges most of his own music, inspired by Pharrell Williams and N.E.R.D., and he has also built the clothing brand Golf Wang and the annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival festival in Los Angeles.
Odd Future and the early years
Tyler and his friends in Odd Future released their early mixtapes for free online, including Tyler's Bastard in 2009, and built a cult following through blogs, Tumblr and wild live shows. In 2011, their chaotic television debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, backed by The Roots, and the eerie black-and-white video for "Yonkers" made them one of the most talked-about groups in music. "Yonkers" won him the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist that year.
More than music
Beyond his albums, Tyler co-created the Adult Swim sketch show Loiter Squad and the animated series The Jellies!, designs clothing for Golf Wang and Golf le Fleur, and has collaborated with Converse on his own sneakers. His Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival brings together rap, R&B and indie acts each year in Los Angeles.
Every album is a character
Tyler gives many of his albums a character and a look. On Igor he wore a blond bowl-cut wig and pastel suits to tell a story of falling in and out of love. On Call Me If You Get Lost he became Tyler Baudelaire, a globe-trotting traveler, with DJ Drama hosting the album like one of his classic mixtapes. Chromakopia introduced St. Chroma, a masked figure in a military-style uniform, and the album explored fame, family and growing older.
Grammy wins and chart records
Igor won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2020, and Call Me If You Get Lost won the same award two years later. Igor was his first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, and Call Me If You Get Lost, Chromakopia and Don't Tap the Glass all followed it to the top.
The story behind See You Again
"See You Again" is a song about an all-consuming crush. Kali Uchis sings the soaring chorus, and Tyler's production layers strings and warm synths around it. Released on Flower Boy in 2017, it slowly became one of his most streamed songs, driven in part by social media, and it is now the song most new fans hear first.
