Who was Sam Cooke?
Sam Cooke was born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and grew up in Chicago, the son of a minister. As the lead singer of the Soul Stirrers from 1950 to 1956, he became a gospel star, then crossed over to pop, a controversial move at the time. His smooth, effortless voice and songwriting helped create soul music, and he was also a businessman, co-founding his own label, SAR Records, and owning his publishing. He died on December 11, 1964, at the age of 33, shot at a Los Angeles motel in circumstances that are still debated. In 1986 he was among the first artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The story behind A Change Is Gonna Come
Cooke wrote "A Change Is Gonna Come" in 1963, moved by the civil rights movement, by his own experience of being turned away from a whites-only motel and by Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind", which he admired. Its sweeping strings and his vulnerable vocal made it unlike anything else he recorded. Released as a single shortly after his death, it became an anthem of the civil rights movement and is now considered one of the greatest songs ever written. From gospel to soul
When Cooke left the Soul Stirrers for pop, many in the gospel world felt betrayed, but his move opened the door for Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and the soul singers of the 60s, who brought church singing into popular music. Otis Redding, Rod Stewart and many others recorded his songs, and generations of singers have studied his phrasing. For more, see our gospel songs.
