Who are No Doubt?

No Doubt formed in Anaheim, California, in 1986, started by Eric Stefani and John Spence, with Eric's younger sister Gwen singing backup. After Spence's death in 1987, Gwen became the lead singer, and the classic lineup settled with bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young. They spent nearly a decade playing Orange County ska clubs and backyard parties before Tragic Kingdom, released in 1995, became a worldwide smash, topped the Billboard 200 and was certified diamond in the US.

No Doubt albums in order

  • No Doubt (1992): an upbeat ska debut released at the height of grunge.
  • The Beacon Street Collection (1995): a self-released album of songs recorded in the band's Anaheim house.
  • Tragic Kingdom (1995): the diamond-selling breakthrough with "Just a Girl", "Spiderwebs" and "Don't Speak".
  • Return of Saturn (2000): a more introspective record about growing up, love and wanting a family.
  • Rock Steady (2001): a dancehall and electro-pop party album with "Hey Baby" and "Hella Good".
  • Push and Shove (2012): the reunion album, with "Settle Down".

No Doubt and the Orange County ska scene

No Doubt came out of the same Southern California ska and punk scene as bands like Reel Big Fish and Sublime. Gwen Stefani even sang on Sublime's "Saw Red", a duet from their 1994 album Robbin' the Hood; see our Sublime songs for more from that era. Tragic Kingdom carried that ska energy, with horns and skanking guitars, onto pop radio around the world.

The Super Bowl, the hiatus and the reunions

In 2003 No Doubt played the Super Bowl XXXVII halftime show alongside Shania Twain and Sting. After the Rock Steady tour, the band went on hiatus while Gwen Stefani launched a hugely successful solo career with Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and "Hollaback Girl". They reunited for a summer tour in 2009, released Push and Shove in 2012 and returned again for a celebrated set at Coachella in 2024.

The story behind Don't Speak

Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal dated for seven years, and their breakup shaped much of Tragic Kingdom. "Don't Speak", which Gwen wrote with her brother Eric, started as a love song and was rewritten after the split into a plea to a partner not to explain why it is over. Released in 1996, it spent weeks at number one on Billboard's radio chart; it was not released as a commercial single in the US, so it was not eligible for the Hot 100 at the time. Its video, which shows the tension between Gwen and the rest of the band, made the story public.

The story behind Just a Girl

Gwen Stefani wrote "Just a Girl" with Tom Dumont about the frustration of being treated as fragile because she was a young woman, including her parents' worry when she drove home late at night. Its sarcastic lyrics and new-wave guitar made it a feminist anthem of the 90s, and it remains one of the most recognizable openers in rock.

Grammy wins

No Doubt won two Grammys for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals: for "Hey Baby" and for "Underneath It All". Both came from Rock Steady, the album where the band worked with dancehall stars and producers in Jamaica and the US and moved toward reggae, dancehall and electro-pop.
