Who is Nelly?

Nelly was born Cornell Haynes Jr. on November 2, 1974, in Austin, Texas, and moved to St. Louis as a child. He formed the St. Lunatics with friends in the 90s, and his solo debut, Country Grammar, made him a star in 2000 with a melodic, sing-song flow and a Midwestern accent that sounded like nothing else in rap. Over the next five years he became one of the best-selling artists of the decade, and in 2004 he released two albums, Sweat and Suit, on the same day. He has since moved into country music with the 2021 album Heartland, competed on Dancing with the Stars and kept touring his hits.

Nelly and the St. Lunatics

Before he went solo, Nelly rapped with the St. Lunatics, a group of friends from St. Louis that included Murphy Lee, Ali, Kyjuan and City Spud. When Country Grammar took off, he brought the crew with him: they appear on "Batter Up", "Air Force Ones" and "Shake Ya Tailfeather", and the group released its own album, Free City, in 2001. The Band-Aid Nelly wore on his cheek in the early 2000s was a show of support for City Spud while he was in prison.

Nelly albums to start with

  • Country Grammar (2000): the diamond-selling debut, with "Ride wit Me" and "E.I.".
  • Nellyville (2002): his biggest era, with "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma".
  • Sweat and Suit (2004): two albums released on the same day, one for the club and one for slow jams.
  • 5.0 (2010): with "Just a Dream".
  • Heartland (2021): his country album, with "Lil Bit".

The story behind Hot in Herre

"Hot in Herre" was produced by The Neptunes, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, and built around a sample of Chuck Brown's go-go classic "Bustin' Loose". Released in 2002 as the lead single from Nellyville, it spent seven weeks at number one and won the Grammy for Best Male Rap Solo Performance. It is still one of the most played party songs of the 2000s, at clubs, weddings and summer cookouts alike.

The story behind Dilemma

"Dilemma", with Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child, samples Patti LaBelle's 1984 ballad "Love, Need and Want You", and LaBelle herself appears in the video. The song spent ten weeks at number one on the Hot 100 in 2002 and won the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. See our Patti LaBelle songs for the original.

Nelly's style

Nelly's image was as famous as his hooks in the early 2000s: crisp white Air Force 1 sneakers, oversized jerseys, a headband and, for a time, the Band-Aid on his cheek. He turned that style into business with the clothing lines Vokal and Apple Bottoms, and "Air Force Ones" became an anthem for sneaker fans that is still played whenever a new pair drops.

Nelly and country music

Nelly has always liked country music. "Over and Over" with Tim McGraw was a top three crossover in 2004, his remix of Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" became one of the biggest country songs of 2013, and in 2021 he released Heartland, an album of country collaborations. For more from his duet partner, see our Tim McGraw songs.

Grammy wins

Nelly won three Grammys: Best Male Rap Solo Performance for "Hot in Herre", Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Dilemma" and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Shake Ya Tailfeather".
