Who are Fleetwood Mac?

Fleetwood Mac formed in London in 1967 as a blues band led by guitarist Peter Green, with drummer Mick Fleetwood and, soon after, bassist John McVie, whose names gave the band its name. Christine McVie joined in 1970, and at the end of 1974 the band added the American duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. That lineup made Fleetwood Mac one of the best-selling bands of all time, and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Rumours

Fleetwood Mac recorded Rumours in 1976 while both couples in the band, John and Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, were breaking up, and many of its songs are about each other. "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams" answer one another, while Christine McVie's "Don't Stop" looks bravely forward. Released in 1977, Rumours spent 31 weeks at number one, won the Grammy for Album of the Year and became one of the best-selling albums ever made.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham

Before they joined Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were a California duo who had released one album, Buckingham Nicks. Mick Fleetwood heard Buckingham's guitar playing and invited him to join, and Buckingham insisted that Nicks come too. Her mystical songs, like "Rhiannon", "Dreams" and "Gypsy", and his inventive guitar and production, heard on "Go Your Own Way" and "Big Love", transformed the band. The Chain

"The Chain" was pieced together from parts of several songs and is the only Rumours track credited to all five members. Its closing section, built on John McVie's famous bass line, became the theme for the BBC's Formula One coverage in the UK, and the band often opens or closes concerts with it.

Dreams and a viral comeback

"Dreams" was the band's only American number one, in 1977. In 2020 a viral video of a man skateboarding to the song while drinking cranberry juice sent it back up the charts more than 40 years later, and Mick Fleetwood himself joined in with his own version of the video.
