Who are Big and Rich?
Big and Rich are Big Kenny, born Kenny Alphin, and John Rich, a former member of the band Lonestar. The two started writing songs together in Nashville in the late 90s and signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2003. Their debut album, Horse of a Different Color, mixed country with rock guitars, rap, gospel choirs and showmanship, and became one of the biggest country albums of 2004. They won the 2004 Billboard Music Award for New Country Duo or Group of the Year.
The MuzikMafia
Big Kenny and John Rich co-founded the MuzikMafia, a loose collective of Nashville artists who met to play music outside the mainstream. Its members included Gretchen Wilson, whose debut hit "Redneck Woman" was co-written by John Rich, the country rapper Cowboy Troy and singer James Otto. The group's motto, music without prejudice, summed up the mix of styles that made Big and Rich stand out.
The story behind 8th of November
"8th of November" honors Niles Harris, a soldier in the 173rd Airborne Brigade who was wounded on November 8, 1965, during a battle in Vietnam in which many of his fellow soldiers were killed. Big Kenny met Harris and wrote the song with John Rich to tell his story, and it opens with a spoken introduction by Kris Kristofferson. It has become a favorite for Veterans Day and military memorials. For more, see our Veterans Day songs.
Lost in This Moment, a wedding favorite
"Lost in This Moment" was written as a wedding song, and it became their only number one in 2007. It is still one of the most popular country choices for a first dance or a ceremony. For more, see our country wedding songs and first dance songs.
